HOMEWORK, Friday, April 30, 2010

Guess what?! It's an R & R weekend so there's no homework!

However, if you don't have your lines memorized for Part 7 of Mother and the Goose or for Part 8 of Out of the Box, you still need to be off-book by Monday...which means you still have work to do! Sorry. : (

Enjoy your R & R time and come back with good energy and ready-to-work brain cells for the last three weeks of class!

Shower the People You Love With Love

Shower the people you love with love
Show them the way that you feel
Things are gonna be much better
If we only will
- James Taylor

And today the Room 503 students did just that: they showered Mrs. Hipple with gifts and treats and lots of love in celebration of the soon-to-be-William Hipple IV.

Thanks to the parents who provided delicious treats. I know Mrs. Hipple was absolutely thrilled with the surprise party and the lovely gifts (see photos below). We are blessed to have such thoughtful, caring students and parents in this 2009-2010 school year!

TPA/TPJA Dared to Care!

Today was the last day of our Dare to Care Campaign-Drive. The students and I are pleased to say that it was a total success!

What started out as a fairly "slow" day on Monday, picked up wildly on Tuesday (go, Section A!), and by this afternoon here were the numbers:

Section A...435 items
Section B...176 items
Section C....92 items

This was a terrific way to get our whole school involved in helping out those less fortunate, and it was a really wonderful event to have the students of Room 503 lead. Our classroom philosophy, O.T.O. (Other Than Ourselves) was fully realized as we were able to not only give to others who have less, but to call ourselves (and others) to extend a hand.

As Margaret Mead once said:

Never doubt that a small group of commited citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.

A big thank you to all of you parents who donated!

Tomorrow, at homeroom, the Putrasahans will be bringing in a special treat to celebrate the students' efforts and success. They have truly earned it.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Cheers,
Ms. Nicky Pitman

Dare to Care

This past week the students in Room 503 unanimously agreed to spearhead a campaign drive to support a children's shelter in Puerto Penasco, Mexico. Marisa, her brother, Josh, and their parents, Kris and Maya Putrasahan had spent a good portion of their Spring Break at Esperanza, volunteering their time, and were hoping to do something more.

After hearing about the Putrasahan's experiences and the children's needs at Esperanza, I thought it would be great if Room 503 could get involved somehow (as well as Section 7A) - especially as it fits so well with our classroom philosophy, O.T.O. (Other Than Ourselves). Why stop at two class sections, we then thought. Let's get the whole school involved.

Friday morning the students of Room 503 did just that. Armed with fliers, the students set out in small groups and made their way into (almost) every first period classroom to tell all of the TPA student community about next week's campaign drive, Dare to Care - in conjunction with Earth Day Week (Earth Day is Thursday, April 22), and encourage them to participate (see flyer text below).

Then, this afternoon, fueled by pizza (provided by Dr. Putrasahan), some of the students from Room 503, some of the 7A students, and a few others stayed after school to make posters for next week's campaign (see photos below).

I am really proud of the students and their efforts. It's great to see the youngest students in the TPJA/TPA community taking up the leadership role and doing good for the planet and those who reside on it.

Truth or Dare?
It’s not just a game.

Truth: Earth Day is April 22.
Dare to care: Dare to care for the Earth and for someone who is less fortunate than us.

Truth: Many countries in the world are experiencing food shortages while we have a surplus of food in the United States.
Dare to care: Dare to donate non-perishable food items, which will be given to Esperanza, a children’s shelter in Puerto Penasco, Mexico.

Truth: Many people are not able to practice good hygiene habits or live in sanitary conditions because they cannot afford the supplies.
Dare to care: Dare to donate personal hygiene supplies and cleaning supplies, which will be given to Esperanza.

Truth: There is an abundance of clothing in the United States while many people in poorer nations do not have more than two sets of clothes.
Dare to care: Let us “step up to the plate” by recycling our gently used clothes and donating them to Esperanza.

The A’s, B’s and C’s of “Dare to Care” Week

What: Earth Day Week/ “Dare to Care” – Supplies Drive Challenge for ‘Esperanza para los Ninos’
When: Earth Day Week – Monday, April 19 through Thursday, April 22.
Where: TPA/TPJA Campus
How: 3 teams will be formed comprised of every grade level
according to their section (A, B and C). Supplies will be
collected in labeled bins placed in the courtyard and the
section that collects the most supplies at the end of Earth
Day Week will be recognized with a plaque to be
displayed on campus.

Testing...One, Two, Three...Testing

Testing, as in State Standarized Testing: AIMS. Testing: one, two, three days of testing (and another day to go yet, next Tuesday). I have to say the students have handled it better than I have. However, standardized tests are a part of the American educational landscape, and so test we must! With five full weeks of school left (and three days of finals), there is much to do and so AIMS feels like an unwelcomed guest.

Other than AIMS though, we are finishing up our Rome unit (test on Tuesday), and next week we'll be moving into the Middle Ages. We are winding up another round of vocabulary words (test on Monday) and having our Tea to celebrate our completion of A Wrinkle in Time (tomorrow). Next week we will begin Adam of the Road.

As you know, we had a Sixth Grade exhibit of our Rome projects last week entitled All Roads Lead to Rome (you can see photos a few posts below). I'm sorry I missed posting about it last week. I was absolutely comatose by the end of Friday's festivities. I hope that the students all feel good about their hard work. Overall, the structures were truly amazing and I am very proud of the reserach and writing work the students put into their papers.

The students have received the first half of their scripts for their productions of Mother and the Goose (Room 503) and for Out of the Box (Room 506). They are working hard (and I am working them harder) in rehearsals. They are bringing together all of the skills we have been working on throughout the year. Next week you will be receiving information about how you (parents) can get involved to make the productions a success. In the meantime, SAVE THE DATE: Wednesday, May 26, 6:00 PM for the final performances (and end-of-the-year celebration).

Fourth Quarter progress reports are due by teachers Tuesday night, April 20. I imagine that access to these will be available, at the latest, the following Monday. These reports contain just a few comments and no grades (unless your student is receiving a "D" or "F" - and you will be contacted prior to grades being posted should this be the case for your student).

If you have any questions or would like to discuss anything about your student's work, please email me at tpjapitman@gmail.com or phone me on my cell phone: (760) 641-3427.

Enjoy the upcoming weekend!

Cheers,
Ms. Nicky Pitman

Presentations of the Structures

Friday afternoon, as part of our All Roads Lead to Rome exhibit, the students presented the structures they created by explaining the type of structure it was, where it was located/built in the Empire, what materials were used, who commissioned the project and why, the date(s) it was built, and what happened to the building in subsequent years. This gave all students an opportunity to share their "expertise" on the structure they had studied as well as learn about the ones their peers had researched. After researching, writing, and creating a model of their structure, it was a good opportunity for the students to verbally explain what they had learned.
