Fun on Friday

Happy Birthday to one of the very distinguished members of Room 503, Brianna Lejewski (twelve years old, tomorrow). Brie's birthday marked our first birthday celebration of the year. Many thanks to her parents for providing a rousing, celebratory sugar rush for all of us in Room 503, mid-morning, in the form of delicious cinnamon rolls.

Our egg experiment yesterday warranted further discussion about getting a class pet. I made the final decision: we are going to become the proud parents of a gecko. Geckos make terrific pets: they are lower maintenance than most, good with people and are inexpensive to feed. More information to follow.

This afternoon, we began our Finally it's Friday groups, per the usual, but somewhere down the line (what I had thought would actually be a short discussion amongst Sixth Graders) it turned into a rousing, passionate and lengthy discussion that you might hear amongst TPA upper classmen. But probably louder.

Our discussion began with whether or not good will always conquer evil. This was a great disccussion in and of itself, but it wove in and out and around and about many topics, and ended with whether or not NBA players are paid what they're worth compared to other professions. I confess: I allowed the conversation to go off track and go on far longer than necessary. However, the majority of the students in Room 503 were so engaged, passionate and inspiring - I felt it appropriate to let them carry on.

I had to stop the discussion as school was coming to a close. However, I told the students how proud I was of all of them. They were really thinking - and digging deeply. They were asking good questions and responding with thoughtful - and passionate - ideas. It was awesome! And fun. I am looking forward to future discussions.

Have a wonderfully well-deserved weekend!

Cheers,
Ms. Pitman
