Dare to Care

This past week the students in Room 503 unanimously agreed to spearhead a campaign drive to support a children's shelter in Puerto Penasco, Mexico. Marisa, her brother, Josh, and their parents, Kris and Maya Putrasahan had spent a good portion of their Spring Break at Esperanza, volunteering their time, and were hoping to do something more.

After hearing about the Putrasahan's experiences and the children's needs at Esperanza, I thought it would be great if Room 503 could get involved somehow (as well as Section 7A) - especially as it fits so well with our classroom philosophy, O.T.O. (Other Than Ourselves). Why stop at two class sections, we then thought. Let's get the whole school involved.

Friday morning the students of Room 503 did just that. Armed with fliers, the students set out in small groups and made their way into (almost) every first period classroom to tell all of the TPA student community about next week's campaign drive, Dare to Care - in conjunction with Earth Day Week (Earth Day is Thursday, April 22), and encourage them to participate (see flyer text below).

Then, this afternoon, fueled by pizza (provided by Dr. Putrasahan), some of the students from Room 503, some of the 7A students, and a few others stayed after school to make posters for next week's campaign (see photos below).

I am really proud of the students and their efforts. It's great to see the youngest students in the TPJA/TPA community taking up the leadership role and doing good for the planet and those who reside on it.

Truth or Dare?
It’s not just a game.

Truth: Earth Day is April 22.
Dare to care: Dare to care for the Earth and for someone who is less fortunate than us.

Truth: Many countries in the world are experiencing food shortages while we have a surplus of food in the United States.
Dare to care: Dare to donate non-perishable food items, which will be given to Esperanza, a children’s shelter in Puerto Penasco, Mexico.

Truth: Many people are not able to practice good hygiene habits or live in sanitary conditions because they cannot afford the supplies.
Dare to care: Dare to donate personal hygiene supplies and cleaning supplies, which will be given to Esperanza.

Truth: There is an abundance of clothing in the United States while many people in poorer nations do not have more than two sets of clothes.
Dare to care: Let us “step up to the plate” by recycling our gently used clothes and donating them to Esperanza.
